Hedrick 493: 'One of the Cincinnati horticultural circle, which just before the civil war included probably the most enthusiastic horticulturalists in American was E. J. Hooper, who in 1857 published Hooper's Western Fruit Book. It was published in Cincinnati and was considered not only an authoritative treatise, but a fine illustration of the printer's art since it had color plates as well as black and white illustrations. In all parts of the West in the middle of the nineteenth century, what was written in Hooper was the final word.' Massachusetts Horticultural Society Catalogue 146.
