Description

8vo. Volume 2 (of 3) only. (28), 1130, (9) pp., final blank page. Title-page printed in red and black. With engraved title, engraved frontispiece, and 34 (instead of 36) numbered engraved plates. Contemporary full calf with giltstamped spine and spine-title, as well as giltstamped initials "HP" and date "1696" to cover. All edges gilt. Rare pirated edition of this popular devotional. "An entertaining book of meditation, with pious reflections skillfully connected with examples from history and literature" (Faber du Faur). Attractively illustrated and enlivened with anecdotes, the "Ruhstunden" were published in three volumes from 1676. The unauthorized Osnabr ck edition also comprised three volumes, this being Volume 2. Reissued several times, it was one of the most successful publications by Francisci, who in this work expertly "combine[d] an astounding love for detail with what was then understood under 'frommer Sinn' - two features which particularly appealed to his contemporaries" (ibid.). - Head of spine wormed. Paper evenly browned throughout; occasionally brownstained; plate XXIV with a larger tear, hardly affecting image. Stricken out handwritten ownerships of Daniel Godenius, dated 6 January 1767, and of a member of the Colloin family, dated 6 July 1767, to flyleaf; ownership of M. Lythberg to verso of flyleaf (undated). Several old shelfmarks to flyleaf and pastedown. A prominent example of German baroque literature. - VD 17, 3:314120C. D nnhaupt I, 645, 25.I, b. Cf. Faber du Faur 738/739. Jantz I, 1002 (other editions).
