8vo [22.5 x 16 cm]; xxiv, 490 pp, frontis (port of author), portrait of Stanley, numerous full page plates from engravings, other illus, folding colored map of the equatorial province and folding facsimile of the Mahdi's letter in rear pocket, index. original pictorial green cloth, gilt lettering, gilt vignette on spine, little rubbed at edges, light stain on spine, else a near fine clean & attractive copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Work p. 23. Henry M. Stanley wrote a good introductory preface. The author spent 9 months in 1888 and 1889 to help save the Emin Pasha and describes his travels in the Lake Albert area in great detail including his imprisonment. The journey lead to several clarifications of geography including the sources of the Nile.
