Description

Braunschweig, Friedrich Vieweg und Sohn, 1852. 8vo. xiii, 172 pp. Original printed wrappers. [AND] Rostock, Stiller (GHermann Schmidt), 1866. 8vo. 55 pp.; two lithographed plates. Original printed wrappers. Bound together in contemporary (1867) grained half calf over pebbled cloth. = Two works by the German naturalist and clergyman Louis Christian Heinrich Vortisch (1804-1871). The first is a "Theory of the Earth", more in particular a catastrophy-theory mostly based upon climate changes - a popular theme still. The second work is a non-mathematical attempt to debunk Newton's law of gravity. The original wrappers are inscribed "seinem lieben Sohn Louis der Verfasser", dated 1866. Here, "gen[annt] Burnet" is added to his name. In 1853, he received the academic surname Burnet, and was elected as a member of the Leopoldina, section Geology and Paleontology section. On the front free enpaper we find the author's blindstamp, with the inscrived date 1867, strongly suggesting that this was the autor's personal copy. This seems to explain why both works are bound together, and why one has a dedication to the author's son. Another - cancelled - stamp, of the Ritter u. Landschaftsbibliothek Mecklenburg on the first title blank verso. A bit foxed throughout, otherwise a very good, unique item.
