The poet and novelist, Maximilian Dauthendey (1867-1918), began his career as a painter and remained highly responsive to sensuous impressions. He led a restless life in Germany, Sweden, London, and Paris, extending his range later to the USA, Mexico, Greece, Egypt, and the Far East. At the outbreak if World War One (1914) he undertook a journey round the world, which included Arabia and New Guinea, but was interned in Java, where he died. A scarce Nazi era edition of this popular novel about life in Japan, which was first published in 1911. WWII 2
