Description

Printed in Italics. 430 pp. 16mo. 18th-century calf, with spine label (somewhat rubbed, hinges starting, head and foot of back worn). From the collection of Hendrik H. L. Vervliet. Lyon, Sebastian Gryphius, 1547. Famous poetic description of the Second Punic War; it is the longest of all Roman epics. Silius Italicus (c. 25 - c. 100 A.D.), Roman politician, poet and a consul under Nero, was greatly indebted to the syntactial and formal perfection of Vergil. This is a reprint of the Aldus edition of 1524, with the dedication by Francesco Asolano, and a life of Silius by Pietro Crinito (1465-1504). - Title somewhat spotted with ms. name, number and library stamp, name stamp on flyleaves, old ms. ink annotations in French of front flyleaf, a few annotations in the text. - STC (French) 401; Adams S-1136; Ebert II, 21226.
