8vo [20.5 x 14 cm]; xv, [i], [i, slip on illustrations tipped in], 491, 11 [ads] pp, frontis (port), numerous illustrations including full page and folding plate printed on both sides, large folding colored map in rear pocket, appendices, index. original pictorial cloth with gilt lettering on spine, patterned endpapers, lightly foxed on edge, slightly shelf worn at edge, ink inscription of title, near fine. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. This Ceylon journalist describes the Crown Colony's history since 1803, the introduction of cacao, tea & coffee, the growth of trade and population and the attractions of the island to travellers. The illustrations include scenes, people, vegetation, trees, ruins, etc. This is an enlarged, revised and updated version of 'Ceylon in 1883', Ceylon in 1884 and Ceylon in 1890 with many new illustrations, and the colored map brought up-to-date. The author had lived in Ceylon many years.
