8vo [19 x 13 cm]; xii, 256 pp, engraved frontis (port), 17 plates including folding panorama of Columbo harbour, tables including folding, large folding colored map (with 6 cm tear), errata slip. full contemporary morocco, gilt decorated on covers and spine, raised bands, inner dentelles gilt, by C. Cross, binder to the queen, all edges gilted, slightly rubbed at edge, fine copy, inscribed on endpaper 'To Fitzroy C. Fletcher from the Rajah', 1886. This Ceylon journalist describes the Crown Colony's history since 1803, the introduction of cacao, tea & coffee, the growth of trade and population and the attractions of the island to travellers. The illustrations include scenes, people, vegetation, trees, ruins, etc. This is an enlarged, revised and updated version of 'Ceylon in 1883' with some new illustrations, including of tea and cacao trees, and includies the latest statistics.
