First Edition. With 77 very beautiful colourplates from paintings by Am?d?e Forestier, each plate with a captioned tissue guard, and with a folding map. Tall 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, the upper cover lettered and decorated with the Belgium national coat-of-arms in yellow within an orange and yellow double-ruled frame, the spine lettered in gilt and decorated with stylized columns in orange and yellow. ix, 390 pp, 8 ads pp. A lovely copy, bright and clean and fine with only the most minor mellowing from age.

Edizione: beautifully illustrated with colourplates. one of adam and charles black's scarcer titles from the beautiful series of illustrated travel books. the author of this work was a prolific writer of history books. sir am?d?e forestier was an anglo-french artist and illustrator who specialized in historical scenes, and landscapes. his paintings are notable for their attention to detail.
