Description

First American Edition, a very large paper copy. Tall 8vo, original printer's boards backed in brown cloth with a printed paper label on the spine. 316pp. A very clean copy, uncut and mostly unopened and uncommon as such, with some foxing to blank endpapers. The original spine material has been skillfully laid down over new cloth and with new spine label.

Edizione: the author's first travel book, and a scarce large paper copy. recent scholars note that modernist critics tended to exclude women writers such as frances trollope from serious consideration, but the new monthly magazine in 1839 claimed that "no other author of the present day has been at once so read, so much admired, and so much abused". the controversy rose out of her strong social novels, such as an antislavery work credited as an influence to harriet beecher stowe.<br> as 'domestic manners of the americans' was more a social commentary; this is considered her first true travel book. it was followed by 'paris and the parisians' in 1835. further writings on austria and italy would follow as well.
