Several books on the period have recently been written by eminent archaeologists, and a dim outline of the material side of Dark Age life is now emerging. The abstract, as usual, trails behind the concrete. The contributions made by archaeologists now invite historians to attend to their part of the picture, and it may be that some basic revisions are imminent. -- In our conventional picture of Dark Age Greece, the various and many communities are ruled by kings. We are careful to concede that these kings were not an impressive lot, and that each sought advice and consent from a council of elders. But the form which we describe is nonetheless monarchical.
