Description

With engr. richly figured title, several large and many smaller metalcut figured intitials, crowned coat of arms on *6 verso. Pp. III-X, 1 unn. leaf, 995 pp., 17 unn. leaves index and errata. Folio. Contemp. vellum, spine painted (or mounted?) dark brown calf, richly gilt (rubbed, several holes in vellum of front cover, crack in upper front hinge). Lyon, Antoine Gryphius, 1566. First edition of an important early detailed account of the Duchy of Burgundy which has remained of fundamental importance up to these days. Its significance lies in its detailed coverage of political, social and cultural developments of the Burgundian state, use of primary sources, and its impact on the development of historiography. G. Paradin (c. 1510-1590) was a canon at Beaujeux, he travelled widely in France and the Netherlands, and wrote on the history of France, Savoy, Burgundy, and Belgium. Like all his contemporaries, he relied on the writings of other authors. There are three parts to the present work, the first a general treatise on the name and the antiquities of Burgundy, followed by an account of the Dukes descendant of Hugo Capet up to Duke Philipp I, and the history of the four Duke's descendant of King Jean de France of the house of Valois, ending with Duke Charles I and with the battle of Nancy. - Engraved title mounted with some pieces missing, cropped at foremargin, and browned, some browning throughout, some light waterstaining towards the end. - STC, (French), 336; Adams P-298; Brunet IV, 359.
