8vo [22.5 x 15 cm]; xvi, 445, 38 [publisher's catalogue] pp, 10 plates including 3 colored plates (chromolithographs), frontis of Macusi Indian in full dancing dress, folding map, 43 other wood-engraved illustrations, index. original red pictorial cloth, decorated in black, gilt title lettering, covers a little worn and faded, spine ends bit frayed, no ownership marks, very good clean copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Goodman 625: 'The work of a British ornithologist, who finally dispelled the Lake Parima myth'. Griffin 4879: 'A classic description of the interior of British Guiana in the 1880's: archaeology, anthropology, and natural history. A number of works published about this time deal with the aboriginal population of Guiana. This is the best of them.
