thick 8vo [22.5 x 14.5 cm]; 397 pp, 71 illustrations on 49 photos plates including frontis, plus 11 plates of face marks, 5 illustrations of wall drawings, map showing route in red, tables, index. original blue cloth with gilt spine title lettering, spine a little faded but lettering clear, a clean fine copy. A picture of this book is available upon request by email. Work p. 85. A narrative of the author's two journeys across Africa, the first from the Cameroons, Gaboon and following the equator to Lake Victoria to Mombassa, the second somewhat further south through Tanganyika to the River Congo on the Atlantic, to study ethnology and natural history. The author was a well regarded expert on African languages and provided extensive language specimens and relationships of tribes based on language in the appendix.
