Description

First edition. A copy with fine Harvard provenance as it bears a gift inscription to and fine engraved bookplate of Francis Weld Peabody. Peabody was known for his research on polio and typhoid fever, and was a celebrated teacher at Harvard Medical School. With a frontispiece portrait of Lieutenant Mackenzie, a fold-out reproduction of a contemporary hand-drawn map found inserted in the original diary showing the April 19, 1775 positions of troops at Lexington and Concord and a fold-out modern sketch interpreting that map made by Allen French. 8vo, publisher's original red paper-covered boards backed in black cloth, the spine lettered in gilt xi, 78 pp. Internally very fine, fresh and clean and bright. The exterior of the solid and sturdy binding very lightly mellowed and showing a bit of rubbing to the edges.

Edizione: an important firsthand account of the battle of lexington and concord; the famous "shot heard around the world", as well as being a valuable resource on the general situation in new england in the days leading towards the american revolution.
the original sketch map found inserted in the diary is the only contemporary source illustrating the actions on the fateful day of april 19, 1775. the diary itself was found by allen french in the possession of a decedent of mackenzie's in england. his search for the original document having started while writing his popular history "the day of concord and lexington".
this copy with the excellent harvard provenance of dr. francis weld peabody. peabody's essay 'the care of the patient' has been part of the harvard medical school curriculum for nearly a century now and is said to be as valid today as it was at the time he first presented it.
