Within the spectrum of the Modern Movement in architecture, the precipitous and unique appearance of the Maison de Verre is an anomaly, which may explain why, with the exception of Sartoris's encyclopedia, it is never included within the standard histories of twentieth-century architecture. The case can be made that the position occupied by the Maison de Verre in modern architectural culture is comparable to the place accorded to Marcel Duchamp's Large Glass in the history of modern art. Indeed, the ontogenic nature of the object in each instance establishes it as an exception within that broad class of objects to which it would otherwise belong. Thus we are equally justified in regarding the Maison de Verre as an "anti-building building" as we are already accustomed to thinking of the Large Glass as an "anti-painting painting."
